Fr. Jim Van Dyke’s Biography

Fr. James Van Dyke, S.J.

Fr. Jim Van Dyke, S.J., has worked in the ministry of Jesuit secondary education for twenty-four years at several Jesuit high schools, including Regis High School, Xavier High School, Fordham Prep, McQuaid Jesuit, and his alma mater Canisius High School.  In addition to classroom experience as an instructor of English and religious studies, Jim has served variously as student chaplain and retreat director, coach of swimming and crew and mock trial, yearbook moderator and faculty chaplain.  He has also offered himself extensively as a Sunday assistant at parishes, most recently at the Church of St. Thomas More in Manhattan.  Jim has board experience with the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo, Regis High School and Fordham Prep.

A proud native of Buffalo, New York, Jim hails from a large family with eight brothers and sisters in addition to his parents, Patricia Lyons Van Dyke and the late James R. Van Dyke, Sr.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Virginia, a Masters in Divinity and a Masters in Theology from the Weston School of Theology (now the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry) and a Masters of Arts in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College, Annapolis.  He entered the New York Province of the Society of Jesus at Syracuse in 1981, professed his first vows in August 1983, and was ordained by Bishop Patrick Sheridan at the Fordham University Church in June 1993.  Having completed his tertianship in Australia in 2002, Jim professed his final vows in the Society of Jesus in at McQuaid Jesuit High School in November 2005.
